Systematic position: Taphrorychus bicolor is a species of bark beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is a specialized pest that plays a significant role in the degradation of weakened timber within forest ecosystems.

Affected crops: The primary host species for this beetle is the European beech (Fagus sylvatica). While it prefers beech trees, it can occasionally be found on other hardwood species that have been significantly compromised by environmental stress, diseases, or previous physical damage.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle follows the typical pattern of scolytid beetles, involving four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults generally overwinter under the bark of host trees. Once spring temperatures reach specific thresholds, the adults emerge to bore into new hosts, where they excavate galleries for mating and egg-laying, beginning a new generation.

Damage and harmfulness: The damage is primarily caused by larval and adult feeding under the bark, which interrupts the flow of sap and nutrients through the cambium. This action can lead to canopy thinning, branch dieback, and in cases of severe infestation, the death of the entire tree. The presence of fine boring dust on the bark surface is a key diagnostic indicator of an active infestation.

Control measures: Managing Taphrorychus bicolor requires a proactive approach centered on forest hygiene and silvicultural practices:

• immediate removal and destruction of infested wood before the next generation emerges;
• monitoring tree health to detect initial signs of colonization early;
• promoting the natural resistance of beech stands through thinning and proper canopy management;
• application of targeted insecticides during periods of peak beetle flight if the infestation levels threaten the stability of the stand.
