Yucca scale

The Yucca scale (Latin: Targionia yuccarum) is a small insect from the order Hemiptera, belonging to the family Diaspididae. This harmful organism specializes in attacking succulent plants, primarily members of the Yucca genus, disrupting their physiological processes and reducing their aesthetic value.

The main food source for this species includes various types of yucca. In closed environments or greenhouses, the pest can spread to related succulent plant species. Insect colonies localize on leaves and stems, attaching firmly to plant tissues to feed on cellular sap.

The biology of Targionia yuccarum is characterized by the presence of a protective shell, known as a scale, which reliably hides the female and the egg clutch from external environmental factors. The pest passes through several developmental stages, starting with a mobile crawler larva that actively moves across the plant to find the most succulent areas before finally settling.

The damage caused by these insects manifests as discolored spots, yellowing, and subsequent drying of the leaf plates. In areas with high scale density, the growth of the yucca slows down, the plant loses turgor, and without proper management, the entire plant may die due to exhaustion and the development of secondary fungal infections that thrive on the insects' honeydew secretions.

Protection measures require a comprehensive approach combining prevention and chemical treatment. Effective strategies include:

• Regular inspection of plants to detect infestation clusters at an early stage.
• Mechanical removal of scales using a soft brush dipped in a soap or alcohol solution.
• Use of systemic insecticides capable of penetrating plant tissues.
• Isolating infested plants from healthy collections.
