The genus Thamnosphecia belongs to the family Sesiidae, commonly known as clearwing moths. These insects are recognized for their remarkable Batesian mimicry, resembling wasps or hornets, which aids in their survival. As agricultural pests, they pose a significant threat due to their internal wood-boring nature, which makes them difficult to control.

These moths primarily infest fruit-bearing trees and various ornamental woody plants. Members of the Rosaceae family are the most susceptible, with reports of damage on apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees. Infestations are often more severe in orchards where trees already have bark wounds or poor structural integrity.

The life cycle typically spans one to two years, with larvae residing inside the wood throughout their development. Heavy infestations often result in branch dieback, oozing of sap from the bark, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree.
