Thamnurgus

Thamnurgus is a genus of beetles belonging to the Scolytinae subfamily, commonly known as bark beetles. As part of the Curculionidae family, these insects are specialized in colonizing the stems, twigs, and branches of specific host plants. Their biology is deeply adapted to a cryptic lifestyle, meaning they spend the majority of their life cycle protected within plant tissues.

The host range of Thamnurgus primarily includes various woody plants and shrubs, often affecting ornamental and subtropical tree species. The insects prefer to infest younger, more tender shoots, which makes them particularly dangerous to nursery stocks and young plantations where the integrity of the stem is crucial for the tree's future development.

The life cycle begins when adult beetles bore into the bark of the host plant. They excavate tunnels where the females lay their eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae continue the process by feeding on the inner bark or pith. This feeding behavior creates galleries that disrupt the vascular tissue, effectively preventing the flow of water and nutrients to the terminal parts of the shoot.

Damage symptoms often appear as localized wilting, followed by the browning and dieback of the infested twigs. A key aspect of their harmfulness is the potential for these beetles to introduce pathogenic fungi into the plant. This symbiotic relationship often leads to secondary infections, causing more systemic damage than the physical boring of the larvae alone.

Combining strict sanitation practices with targeted chemical treatments and regular field monitoring ensures that the beetle population is kept below the economic injury level, protecting both young seedlings and established trees.
