The grain mite (lat. Thes) is a member of the Acaridae family and is a significant pest of stored agricultural commodities. In terms of systematic classification, it belongs to the Acariformes order. These pests are highly specialized, thriving in environments where harvested grain is kept for long-term storage, often causing massive economic losses.
This pest affects a wide range of crops, including wheat, barley, rye, oats, and maize. Furthermore, it is a frequent contaminant in milled products such as flour and various cereals. Their ability to adapt to diverse starchy environments makes them a constant threat to warehouses, mills, and grain elevators across the globe.
The biology of the grain mite is heavily influenced by the humidity and temperature of the storage site. They thrive when the moisture content of the grain exceeds 14-15%. The lifecycle is rapid, allowing for multiple generations within a single storage season. The mites feed primarily on the germ of the seed, which contains essential nutrients required for their development.
Damage caused by these mites is primarily characterized by the destruction of the grain embryo, leading to the total loss of seed viability. Moreover, their activity promotes the spread of fungi and bacteria, leading to heating and clumping of the grain bulk. This process significantly degrades the quality and safety of the grain, rendering it unsuitable for human or animal consumption.
To effectively protect stored grain, the following measures should be implemented:
- Drying grain to a safe moisture level before storage.
- Sanitizing storage facilities and equipment to eliminate lingering pests.
- Applying professional fumigation techniques when infestations are detected.
- Utilizing cooling systems to keep the grain temperature low and inactive.
- Conducting regular inspections and sampling of grain stocks to monitor population density.
