Lychee scale

Thysanofiorinia nephelii is a significant insect pest belonging to the Diaspididae family, commonly referred to as armored scales. This species poses a notable threat to various tropical fruit trees, primarily focusing its feeding activity on nutrient-rich leaf tissues and tender stems.

The primary host for this pest is the lychee tree (Litchi chinensis). In addition to lychee, the scale can impact other related species within the Sapindaceae family, potentially causing significant economic losses in commercial orchards if left unmanaged.

The biology of this scale involves a stationary adult stage protected by a hard, waxy covering. The most active and vulnerable phase in their life cycle is the crawler stage, where newly hatched nymphs move across the plant surface to locate optimal feeding sites before settling down permanently.

Damage caused by Thysanofiorinia nephelii manifests as sap depletion, leading to chlorotic spots on leaves, foliage distortion, and significant leaf drop. Severe infestations weaken the tree structure, making it susceptible to secondary pathogens and reducing overall fruit quality and harvest yield.

Effective management strategies rely on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key tactics include the timely application of systemic insecticides during crawler emergence, physical removal of heavily infested branches, and promoting biological control agents such as parasitic wasps and predatory beetles that naturally suppress scale populations.
