Description

The narrow-winged clearwing moth (Tinthia varipes) is a lepidopteran pest belonging to the Sesiidae family. These moths are well-known for their mimicry, as their appearance closely resembles wasps or hornets, which provides them with a natural defense mechanism.

This species acts as a wood-boring pest, primarily targeting various fruit trees and woody shrubs. The larvae are the main destructive stage, tunneling deep into the shoots, stems, or branches of the host plant to feed on the internal tissues, which can severely compromise the plant structure.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, several larval instars, pupation inside the host tissue, and an adult flight period. Because the larvae remain sheltered within the woody parts of the tree throughout their development, they are largely protected from most external environmental factors and predators.

Damage is characterized by stunted growth, premature leaf wilting, and the eventual death of affected branches. In many cases, the presence of the pest is indicated by accumulation of larval frass (sawdust-like waste) near entry holes on the bark, as well as sap bleeding from the wounds.
