Tocama hebeica is a specific insect species classified within the order Lepidoptera, family Lasiocampidae. This pest belongs to the group of leaf-eating insects which, during periods of mass reproduction, can cause significant economic damage to both agricultural and forest plantations.
The pest primarily affects woody plants and shrubs, including certain fruit trees and wild species. The insect poses a particular threat to shelterbelts and orchards, as the larvae are highly voracious, consuming leaf blades down to the main veins, which leads to the weakening and eventual dieback of branches.
The biological life cycle of the species consists of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and imago. Overwintering typically occurs in the egg or early instar larval stage, secured on bark or within the leaf litter. In the spring, with the arrival of consistently warm temperatures, the caterpillars begin active feeding, progressing through several molts until pupation, which usually occurs in dense cocoons on trunks or in the soil.
The damage caused is characterized by extensive crown defoliation. The harmfulness of Tocama hebeica lies in the disruption of plant photosynthesis, which leads to reduced fruit quality, slowed wood growth, and increased susceptibility of trees to secondary infections and infestations by other pests.
Protection strategies include agrotechnical, biological, and chemical methods. It is essential to monitor population density using pheromone traps. When the economic damage threshold is exceeded, spraying with systemic or contact insecticides is applied during the larval emergence period. Additionally, cleaning trunks of egg masses and using biological agents based on Bacillus thuringiensis are effective practices.
