Tolype

The genus Tolype belongs to the Lasiocampidae family, commonly known as lappet moths. These moths are characterized by their stout, hairy bodies, which provide insulation. While they are a natural part of forest ecosystems, some species within this genus can become significant pests in agricultural and residential settings.

These pests primarily target a variety of woody plants. They are frequently found on fruit trees like apple and cherry, as well as several ornamental and forest trees. By feeding on the foliage, the larvae (caterpillars) can cause substantial aesthetic and physiological damage to the host plants during their active growth phase.

The life cycle of the Tolype moth typically involves a single generation per year. They overwinter in the egg stage, with eggs firmly attached to twigs and camouflaged with scales from the female's abdomen. In the spring, larvae emerge synchronously with the bud break of host trees to begin feeding.

The larvae are voracious feeders, causing partial to total defoliation of the tree. The damage is most visible during the larval stage. Repeated defoliation over several seasons can severely weaken the tree's health, leading to stunted growth, reduced fruit production, and increased susceptibility to diseases or bark-boring insects.
