The Larch lappet moth (Tolype laricis) is a species of moth belonging to the family Lasiocampidae, within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is primarily recognized as a defoliator of coniferous trees, showing a particular preference for larch (Larix species) and sometimes various pines. It is an important forest pest, and its presence can significantly impact the vitality of forested areas and ornamental plantations.
The biological cycle of this pest is univoltine, meaning it produces one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, which are typically laid in masses on the branches or trunks of host trees. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae emerge and begin feeding on the newly developed needles, synchronizing their development with the host plant's growth cycle to maximize nutritional intake.
The developmental stages include egg, larva, pupa, and adult (moth). Larvae are cryptic in their behavior and appearance, often resembling the twigs or foliage of the host tree to avoid predation.
