Description

The Large Tolype moth (Tolype velleda) is a member of the Lasiocampidae family, commonly found across North America. The adult moth is known for its heavy, fuzzy appearance, which provides insulation and mimicry. Their wings are adorned with intricate grey and white wavy patterns that resemble lichen or rough tree bark, helping them blend into their surroundings during the daylight hours when they are inactive.

Biologically, this species is classified within the order Lepidoptera. It completes one generation annually. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with females depositing clusters of eggs on small twigs. These egg masses are famously camouflaged with scales shed from the female's own body, rendering them almost invisible to the naked eye or casual observation during dormant seasonal pruning.

The larvae, or caterpillars, are known to feed on a wide variety of deciduous trees. Preferred hosts include important fruit-bearing species such as apple, pear, cherry, and plum, as well as several ornamental and hardwood species like oak, elm, and poplar. Their feeding activity is most intense during the late spring and early summer when the trees are putting out new, succulent foliage.

The damage caused by Tolype velleda is primarily defoliation. Young caterpillars feed gregariously, skeletonizing leaves, while older larvae become solitary feeders capable of consuming entire leaf blades. Heavy infestations can lead to significant stress for the host tree, causing reduced fruit yield, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to other diseases or secondary pest attacks due to the loss of photosynthetic area.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this pest. Cultural practices include pruning and destroying egg masses during the winter months. For active infestations, horticultural oils or biological insecticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are highly effective when applied to young larvae. Chemical insecticides should be reserved for severe outbreaks and applied with caution to minimize impact on beneficial pollinators.
