Lesser pine shoot beetle

Systematic position: The lesser pine shoot beetle (Tomicus brevipilosus) is a member of the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. As a bark beetle species, it is recognized as a significant pest in forestry, capable of causing extensive damage to conifer stands across its range.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets pine trees (Pinus spp.). While it often selects weakened or stressed trees due to drought, pollution, or poor site conditions, large populations can attack healthy trees, causing significant crown thinning and secondary infestations by other insects and fungi.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is synchronized with the seasonal patterns of the host tree. Adults overwinter in the bark or forest litter, emerging in spring to locate suitable hosts. Females construct vertical galleries under the bark, where eggs are deposited. The larvae then bore lateral galleries, consuming the inner bark and disrupting the transport of nutrients.

Nature of damage and harm: The beetle causes damage both under the bark and in the canopy. The subcortical larval galleries effectively girdle the tree, causing the death of the cambium. Additionally, adult beetles tunnel into the shoots of healthy trees for feeding, causing premature needle drop and significant crown loss, which weakens the tree's overall vigor.

Integrated pest management strategies include:

• Implementing regular sanitary logging to remove infested trees from the forest.
• Using trap trees to aggregate and subsequently eliminate beetle populations.
• Maintaining high forest sanitation by removing logging residues.
• Encouraging the presence of natural enemies, such as parasitic wasps and predatory beetles.
• Deploying pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity and density.
