Description

The Mediterranean pine beetle (Tomicus destruens) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family, within the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized as a primary forest pest that poses a significant threat to pine species, particularly in regions with temperate and Mediterranean climates.

This species primarily infests various pine species, including Aleppo pine and maritime pine. Unlike many other bark beetles that only attack stressed or dying trees, Tomicus destruens is capable of colonizing healthy and vigorous individuals, leading to extensive forest decline.

The biological cycle involves the female excavating galleries under the bark, where eggs are deposited. Larvae develop by feeding on the phloem, creating transverse galleries that disrupt the tree's vascular system. The species typically produces one generation per year, though warmer climates may support multiple cycles.

Damage is characterized by both internal gallery formation and the adult "shoot-feeding" stage. Adults tunnel into fresh twigs to feed, which leads to needle discolouration, premature needle fall, and the characteristic "topping" or drying of tree crowns, which significantly weakens the canopy.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation:

  • Sanitary logging to remove infested trees before the beetle emerges.
  • Implementation of pheromone-based trapping systems for population monitoring.
  • Proper disposal of slash and wood residues to eliminate breeding sites.
  • Promoting forest health through selective thinning to increase tree resistance.
