Toumeyella

Toumeyella is a genus of scale insects belonging to the family Coccidae, commonly known as soft scales. These insects are significant pests that feed on plant sap by piercing the surface of stems and branches. When left unmanaged, their populations can grow rapidly, causing severe stress to host plants, particularly within coniferous populations where specific species like Toumeyella parvicornis pose a severe ecological threat.

The primary hosts for Toumeyella include various pine species. These pests typically colonize the twigs and branches of the tree, often hidden in bark crevices. Because they are stationary for most of their adult life, they remain undetected until signs of damage, such as yellowing foliage or stunted growth, become visible across the canopy of the infested tree.

The life cycle begins with overwintering females or nymphs attached to the host bark. As temperatures rise in spring, the females mature and produce eggs under their protective coverings (tests). The hatched nymphs, known as crawlers, emerge and move to new areas of the plant to start feeding. This crawler stage is the most vulnerable period in the insect's life cycle for targeted control efforts.

Host plant damage is caused by the extraction of large amounts of nutrients and the production of honeydew. This sugary substance coats the needles, providing an ideal substrate for sooty mold growth. The resulting black, powdery layer blocks photosynthesis, leading to reduced growth, needle loss, and in severe cases, the death of the host plant if secondary pests take advantage of the weakened condition.

Control of Toumeyella requires a strategic approach.

• Monitor trees regularly during the crawler emergence period.
• Prune and destroy heavily infested branches.
• Apply systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the tree tissues.
• Utilize dormant oils in early spring to smother overwintering stages.
• Promote tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to improve natural defense.
