Pine scale

Pine scale (Toumeyella pinicola) is a significant sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. This pest primarily targets pine trees, extracting sap from young twigs and branches, which can lead to severe health decline in ornamental, plantation, and forest conifers.

The biology of this species involves a single annual life cycle. Females are sessile, meaning they remain attached to the host tree throughout their adult life. They form a convex, brownish scale that protects the developing eggs underneath. The mobile phase, known as the crawler stage, occurs when young nymphs emerge and crawl to new parts of the tree to settle and feed.

Feeding damage is caused by the extraction of large volumes of sap from the host plant's vascular tissue. This loss of nutrients causes stunted shoot growth, needle chlorosis (yellowing), and premature needle drop. In cases of high infestation, trees may exhibit dieback of branches, becoming weakened and susceptible to attacks by bark beetles and various fungal pathogens.

A major indirect symptom is the presence of honeydew, a sticky substance excreted by the scales. This sticky residue acts as a substrate for sooty mold, a fungus that covers the needles and bark in a black layer. This mold inhibits photosynthesis and significantly reduces the aesthetic value and overall vigor of the infected pine trees.

• Regular inspection of bark and twigs for scale insects.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches.
• Applying systemic insecticides during the crawler activity period.
• Using horticultural oils to smother overwintering nymphs.
• Encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles.

Effective management relies on accurate timing. The most vulnerable stage is the crawler phase, as these nymphs lack the protective waxy covering of the adults. Implementing a combination of pruning, biological control, and targeted chemical treatments ensures the best results for controlling the population and restoring the health of the affected coniferous trees.
