Description

Systematic position: The genus Treptoplatypus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). These insects are commonly referred to as ambrosia beetles because of their obligate nutritional relationship with specialized fungi that they cultivate within their tunnels.

Affected crops: They primarily attack a wide variety of hardwood and softwood species. They are particularly attracted to stressed, dying, or freshly cut timber. By targeting weakened trees, they can cause rapid deterioration of timber quality, often rendering lumber unsuitable for commercial use.

Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle is complex and centered around the galleries constructed by the females. The female beetle tunnels into the wood and introduces fungal spores. The larvae do not feed on the wood itself, but on the fungal growth that covers the walls of the tunnels. This biological strategy allows them to colonize dense wood efficiently.

Damage and severity: Signs of infestation include fine, powder-like frass accumulating in bark crevices or at the base of the tree. The damage is characterized by intricate, deep galleries that penetrate the sapwood and heartwood. This causes structural damage to the wood and often facilitates the entry of wood-decay fungi, significantly reducing the economic value of timber.

Control measures: Management of Treptoplatypus requires integrated approaches:

  • Prompt removal of infested, dead, or downed trees to reduce population levels.
  • Rapid transport and processing of logs to limit the window for beetle attack.
