Description

Systematic position. Treptoplatypus solidus belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Platypodinae. These insects are commonly known as ambrosia beetles due to their unique symbiotic relationship with fungi within their gallery systems.

Host plants. The primary hosts include various broad-leaved tree species, with a notable preference for Eucalyptus species. While they often target stressed, dying, or recently felled timber, high-density populations can exert significant pressure on healthy, vigorous trees, leading to widespread damage.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle is entirely cryptic, occurring within the tree trunk. The female excavates a deep tunnel into the wood where eggs are deposited. Upon hatching, larvae do not feed on wood directly but graze on symbiotic "ambrosia" fungi, which the adults introduce into the galleries, turning the tunnels into fungal gardens.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The damage is primarily mechanical and chemical. The extensive galleries disrupt vascular tissues and weaken the structural integrity of the wood. Furthermore, the introduction of pathogenic fungi can lead to tree dieback and significant economic loss by rendering the timber unsuitable for high-value wood processing.

Control measures. Controlling Treptoplatypus solidus relies heavily on silvicultural practices rather than chemical treatments. Key strategies include:

  • Rapid removal of infested trees (sanitation logging).
  • Maintaining tree health through thinning and proper irrigation.
  • Using pheromone traps for early detection.
