Systematic position: Treptoplatypus wilsoni belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is a well-known member of the ambrosia beetle group, classified within the Platypodini tribe, which is characterized by specialized wood-boring behavior.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects conifer species and various types of Eucalyptus. It is most frequently found in Australia. While it often targets dead or stressed timber, high population densities can lead to the colonization of otherwise healthy trees, posing a threat to forest health and timber quality.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is entirely subterranean within the timber. Adult beetles bore deep galleries into the xylem. They introduce specific symbiotic fungi into these tunnels, which serve as the primary nutritional source for the larvae. The beetles possess specialized structures called mycangia to transport these fungal spores.

Damage characteristics: The damage is primarily internal, significantly compromising the structural integrity of the wood. The beetle galleries disrupt the tree's vascular system, and the associated fungi cause staining and decay of the timber. External indicators include small boreholes with fine sawdust, often referred to as frass, accumulating on the bark surface.
