Description

The Eurasian bee beetle (Trichius fasciatus) is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. It is widely known for its striking resemblance to a bumblebee, featuring dense hair and distinct yellow and black transverse stripes across its abdomen. While often observed on flowers, its presence can be problematic for agricultural and ornamental crops during their bloom cycle.

The life cycle of this insect involves a larval stage that takes place primarily in decaying deciduous wood, such as birch or willow logs. The larvae act as decomposers, feeding on rotting organic matter, and therefore do not cause direct damage to live crops. However, the adult beetles are highly active pollinators and flower feeders, which brings them into direct conflict with agricultural interests.

Adult beetles pose a threat to fruit trees, berry bushes, and various floral species. They feed voraciously on pollen, nectar, and the essential parts of the flowers, including pistils and stamens. This destructive behavior prevents proper pollination and fruit set, which can significantly reduce the yield of orchards and small fruit plantations if the beetle population is dense.

The damage is most visible during the peak flowering season. Once a flower is visited by the beetle, the petals are often shredded, and the reproductive organs are consumed, leading to the rapid decay of the bloom. For commercial growers, even moderate levels of infestation can lead to economic losses due to decreased fruit quality and volume.

Controlling the Eurasian bee beetle requires caution, as the pest is most active during periods when bees and other pollinators are also present. Therefore, chemical insecticides are generally discouraged during bloom. Recommended integrated pest management strategies include:

  • Hand-picking the beetles from flowers during early morning hours when they are less agile.
  • Utilizing light traps to capture adults before they inflict significant damage.
  • Removing deadwood and decaying timber from the vicinity to eliminate potential breeding habitats.
  • Applying physical barriers or netting over sensitive crops during the critical flowering window.
