The Shaggy flower beetle (Tropinota squalida) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Scarabaeidae family. Known for its destructive behavior during the spring bloom, this beetle poses a major threat to commercial orchards and home gardens alike by feeding on the reproductive parts of flowers.

This beetle is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant species. The primary hosts include fruit trees such as apples, pears, plums, apricots, and cherries. Additionally, it frequently attacks strawberry patches and various ornamental flowering plants, causing severe aesthetic and economic damage.

The life cycle of Tropinota squalida consists of a single generation per year. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil and emerge in early spring when temperatures begin to rise. While the larvae develop in the soil and feed mainly on decaying organic matter, the adult stage is exclusively herbivorous, focusing on fresh blossoms.

Damage is characterized by the consumption of stamens, pistils, and petals. Because the beetles feed directly on the flower, they prevent fertilization, leading to total crop failure on infested trees. In high-density populations, these beetles can destroy the majority of the blooms in an entire orchard within just a few days of activity.

Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Because the beetles are active during the bloom phase, chemical control is complicated by the need to protect pollinating bees.
