Birch ambrosia beetle

The Birch ambrosia beetle (Trypodendron betulae) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. These beetles are classified as ambrosia beetles because they do not consume wood directly; instead, they cultivate symbiotic fungi within their galleries, which provides nutrition for the developing larvae.

The primary host for this beetle is the birch tree (Betula species). The beetles typically attack stressed, dying, or freshly felled trees. Their presence is often detected by fine wood dust (frass) pushed out from the entrance holes, which indicates that the colonization process is currently underway within the inner layers of the bark and sapwood.

The life cycle involves adult beetles emerging in the spring to locate suitable host trees. Once a host is found, the female bores a gallery deep into the wood. She then inoculates the walls of these tunnels with spores of specific ambrosia fungi carried in special thoracic or mandibular structures called mycangia. The eggs are deposited in niches along the main tunnel, and larvae feed exclusively on the fungal growth.

The damage caused by Trypodendron betulae is characterized by black-stained galleries that penetrate the wood tissue. This staining is caused by the growth of the symbiotic fungus. Even though the structural integrity of the log may not be compromised immediately, the dark streaks significantly downgrade the quality of the timber, making it unsuitable for high-grade cabinetry or fine woodworking.

Effective management strategies for controlling this pest include:

• Rapid removal and processing of freshly felled logs before the flight period of the beetles.
• Sanitation harvesting of wind-thrown or severely weakened birch trees to reduce breeding grounds.
• Application of insecticide treatments to the surface of valuable logs stored in high-risk areas.
• Monitoring population levels using pheromone-based traps during the spring and early summer months.
