Description

Systematic position: The striped ambrosia beetle (Trypodendron lineatum) belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a well-known technical pest that specializes in invading the wood of coniferous trees.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets coniferous species, including spruce, fir, larch, and pine. It typically infests freshly felled logs, windthrown trees, and stressed standing timber, often causing significant economic losses in the forestry and logging industries.

Biology and lifecycle: Adults overwinter in the forest floor litter. Upon the arrival of spring temperatures, they emerge to infest new host material. Females bore deep into the wood to establish galleries. Unlike other bark beetles, they do not feed on wood directly but farm symbiotic ambrosia fungi on the gallery walls to feed their larvae.

Damage and economic impact: The presence of the beetle is marked by piles of fine boring dust near entry holes. The galleries penetrate deep into the sapwood, and the introduced fungi cause dark staining of the wood. This damage, often referred to as "black stain," degrades the quality of timber, making it unsuitable for high-grade lumber or veneer.
