Trypophloeus bark beetle

Trypophloeus

Description

Systematic position. The Trypophloeus genus belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. These are small, specialized bark beetles that are highly adapted to life beneath the bark of host trees, making them difficult to detect until significant damage has already occurred.

Host plants. These beetles primarily infest deciduous trees, with a strong preference for species in the Populus genus, such as aspen and various poplar varieties. They tend to target trees that are physiologically weakened, although large populations can overwhelm healthy stands during drought or extreme weather events.

Biology and life cycle. The beetle's life cycle is completed within the inner bark and cambium layers. After overwintering as adults or larvae, the beetles emerge to mate and bore new galleries. Eggs are deposited, and the developing larvae create feeding tunnels that disrupt the vascular tissues of the tree, effectively hindering the transport of sap.

Damage characteristics and harmfulness. The feeding activity of both adults and larvae results in girdling of the tree, which restricts nutrient flow. Symptoms include leaf chlorosis, twig dieback, and the presence of small entry/exit holes on the bark. If not managed, the infestation leads to the decline and death of the affected trees, posing a significant threat to forestry.

Protection measures. Effective control requires a combination of silvicultural practices and chemical interventions. Management strategies include:

  • Prompt removal and disposal of infested trees to prevent the spread of new generations.
  • Monitoring beetle flight periods using pheromone traps.
  • Application of approved insecticides during the early stages of infestation to prevent mass attack.
  • Maintaining forest vigor through proper thinning and site selection.
