Aspen bark beetle

The aspen bark beetle (Trypophloeus asperatus) is a small wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily targets trees of the Populus genus, significantly impacting the health and commercial value of aspen stands in temperate regions.

The host range is mainly limited to aspen (Populus tremula) and closely related poplar species. While these beetles prefer trees already stressed by drought, poor soil conditions, or previous fungal attacks, they can act as primary pests when their populations reach outbreak levels, capable of overwhelming the natural defenses of even vigorous trees.

The biological cycle is typically univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Adult beetles overwinter under the bark or in the leaf litter. In spring, they emerge to infest new host trees. The females bore through the outer bark to excavate maternal galleries, where they lay their eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae construct individual, winding feeding galleries that extend through the phloem layer.

The damage caused by Trypophloeus asperatus is severe, as the larval galleries disrupt the flow of nutrients and water within the tree. This often leads to localized necrosis of the cambium, bark discoloration, and deep cracking. In cases of heavy infestation, the tree's vascular system is effectively girdled, leading to crown dieback and tree mortality within a few seasons.

Effective management requires a proactive silvicultural approach. Sanitation felling is the most critical measure, involving the systematic removal and destruction of infested timber before the new generation of adults emerges. Maintaining overall forest vigor through proper spacing and thinning helps trees better resist beetle attacks. In high-value ornamental settings, systemic insecticides may be applied during the flight period.
