Description

The poplar bark beetle (Trypophloeus granulatus) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family, within the Scolytinae subfamily. It is a significant wood-boring pest that primarily targets trees belonging to the Populus genus, especially common aspen and various types of poplar.

This beetle is typically opportunistic, often colonizing stressed, diseased, or overmature trees. However, during periods of high population density, it can successfully attack and kill healthy trees, making it a serious concern for forestry and urban landscaping management.

The biological cycle of this species is usually completed within one year. Winter is spent primarily as adults or larvae within the bark of the host tree. With the arrival of warmer spring temperatures, the beetles emerge to mate and bore into the phloem and cambium layer to establish new galleries for egg-laying.

The damage caused by Trypophloeus granulatus is direct and severe. Larval feeding destroys the vascular tissue responsible for nutrient transport within the tree. As these galleries expand and intersect, they cause the bark to die, leading to branch dieback and, if the infestation is severe enough, the eventual death of the entire tree.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling this beetle:

  • Sanitation harvesting of infested or dying trees to reduce the breeding pool.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of logging residues from the forest floor.
  • Continuous monitoring of tree health to detect early stages of infestation.
