Systematic position: The clover seed weevil (Tychius picirostris) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species is a significant pest primarily affecting legumes, specifically red and white clover, causing damage during the plant's reproductive stage.
Affected crops and damage: The weevil specializes in feeding on clover species. While adults may cause minor feeding damage to foliage and buds, the primary damage is caused by the larvae. The larvae bore into the developing seeds within the pods, feeding on the endosperm and embryo, which destroys the seed and renders the harvest unsuitable for planting.
