Description
The citrus nematode (Tylenchulus semipenetrans) is a microscopic soil-borne parasite belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Tylenchulidae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest in citrus-growing regions worldwide, causing the syndrome known as "slow decline" due to its ability to weaken tree vigor over many years.
The primary hosts for this nematode are plants within the Rutaceae family, most notably oranges, lemons, mandarins, and grapefruits. Although primarily associated with citrus, the pest can occasionally infect other woody plants such as grapes or persimmons, complicating crop rotation and orchard management strategies in infested soils.
The life cycle involves the transformation of juveniles into sedentary females that partially embed themselves into the root cortex. While the head and neck are buried within the root to feed on nutrients, the posterior end remains exposed on the root surface. Here, the female deposits eggs into a gelatinous matrix, which often collects soil particles and debris, making them visible under microscopic inspection.
The economic impact of Tylenchulus semipenetrans is significant, as it leads to root dysfunction. The damage causes a reduction in the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals, leading to chlorosis, stunted shoot growth, small fruit size, and general decline. The severity of the damage often correlates with the nematode population density in the soil rhizosphere.
Integrated management is essential for long-term control. Strategies include the use of nematode-free planting stock and resistant rootstocks. Before establishing new orchards, pre-plant soil fumigation is often required. Furthermore, cultural practices such as adequate irrigation, proper fertilization, and the use of organic soil amendments can help improve root health and mitigate the negative effects of nematode infestation.
