Strawberry crown borer

Systematic position. The strawberry crown borer (Tyloderma fragariae) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized pest that primarily affects strawberry crops, and because the larvae are internal feeders, it can be extremely difficult to manage in commercial and garden settings.

Affected crops. This pest primarily attacks cultivated strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa). While it can also inhabit wild strawberry species, its economic impact is most significant in commercial strawberry fields where the monoculture provides abundant food sources for the insect throughout its life cycle.

Biology and life cycle. The adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under debris near the fields. In the spring, the females lay eggs near the base of the strawberry plant. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae bore into the crown of the plant. They complete their larval and pupal stages entirely within the crown tissue, meaning the damage is often hidden until the plant shows clear symptoms of decline.

Nature of damage and pest status. The damage is caused by the larvae feeding on the internal tissues of the plant's crown. This tunneling behavior destroys the plant's vascular system, leading to stunted growth, yellowing of leaves, and a significant reduction in fruit yield. Heavily infested plants may wilt and die, particularly during periods of heat or drought stress.

Control measures. Effective management of Tyloderma fragariae focuses on prevention and cultural practices rather than reactive chemical sprays:

• Planting only clean, certified nursery stock to prevent introducing the pest.
• Avoiding planting new strawberry fields near older, infested plantings.
• Implementing crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
• Removing and destroying infested plants as soon as they are identified to reduce the overall population pressure in the field.
• Applying insecticides targeting adult beetles before egg-laying begins, as larvae are protected inside the plant.
