Uhleria

Uhleria (genus Uhleria) belongs to the lace bug family (Tingidae) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are easily recognized by the intricate, net-like patterns on their wings and pronotum, resembling fine lace. As agricultural pests, they are known for their ability to colonize and damage a wide range of ornamental and woody plant species.

These pests primarily target deciduous trees and shrubs, feeding on the underside of leaves. By using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, they extract plant sap, which directly inhibits the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis efficiently. Chronic infestations lead to severe physiological stress, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to secondary environmental stressors or diseases.

The biology of Uhleria is strongly influenced by temperature and humidity. Their lifecycle consists of egg, nymphal stages, and adult phases. They typically overwinter as adults, finding shelter in bark crevices or thick leaf litter. Once temperatures rise, they emerge to mate and lay eggs, leading to several generations per growing season depending on the climate region.

The damage caused by Uhleria is visually distinct. Infested leaves exhibit a stippled or mottled appearance, turning yellow or white as the cellular content is removed. Over time, these leaves may wither, curl, and drop prematurely. Significant defoliation caused by high pest density can ruin the aesthetic value of ornamental plants and drastically reduce the vigor of young trees.
