Araucaria scale

Systematic position: The Araucaria scale (Uhleria araucariae) is a member of the Coccidae family, commonly known as soft scales. This insect is a significant pest primarily targeting coniferous species, particularly those in the genus Araucaria grown in indoor and greenhouse environments.

Host plants: The pest primarily infests Araucaria species. Insects tend to congregate on the undersides of needles, along the stems, and within the branch axils, where they can easily penetrate the plant tissue to extract nutrients from the phloem.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves egg, crawler, and adult stages. Females remain stationary once they have settled, protected by a convex, brownish scale-like covering. In the stable conditions of greenhouses or homes, reproduction can occur continuously, leading to overlapping generations and a persistent infestation.

Damage and harmfulness: Feeding activity causes the plant to lose vigor, leading to yellowing, needle drop, and stunted growth. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage, blocks sunlight, and interferes with the plant’s photosynthesis process, further weakening the specimen.

Control measures: Management involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

• Pruning and removing heavily infested branches.
• Manual removal of scales using cotton swabs dipped in alcohol.
• Application of systemic insecticides to target the insects through sap circulation.
• Regular inspection and isolation of newly acquired or infested plants.
