Unachionaspis scale

Systematic position. The genus Unachionaspis belongs to the family Diaspididae, commonly known as armored scales, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are highly specialized pests that live beneath a protective, waxy scale covering, which serves as a defense against both environmental conditions and many natural enemies.

Host plants. Unachionaspis species primarily infest woody plants and ornamental shrubs. They are frequently observed on spindle trees (Euonymus) and other deciduous plants. The insects colonize stems, branches, and the undersides of leaves, often forming dense layers that can significantly impede the normal physiological development of the host plant.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves an egg stage, a mobile crawler stage, and a sedentary adult stage. The crawlers are the only mobile life stage and are responsible for the dispersal of the population. Once a crawler settles, it inserts its stylets into plant tissue, begins feeding, and produces a hard shield-like cover, remaining in the same location for the rest of its life.

Damage and severity. The primary damage caused by Unachionaspis is the extraction of plant sap, which leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and twig dieback. In severe infestations, the foliage may drop prematurely, and the plant's structural integrity can be compromised. Over time, heavy colonization by these scales weakens the host, making it susceptible to secondary stressors such as fungal diseases.

Control measures. Management of Unachionaspis is challenging due to the protective scale cover that shields adults from many pesticides. The most effective window for chemical intervention is during the crawler stage, when the insects lack this protective barrier. Integrating cultural practices, such as pruning infected wood and ensuring plant health, with targeted insecticide applications provides the best results.
