Unaspis scale

The genus Unaspis belongs to the family Diaspididae, commonly known as armored scales. These insects are significant pests affecting various woody plants. The most economically damaging species in this genus is Unaspis citri, frequently referred to as the citrus snow scale, which poses a substantial threat to commercial citrus orchards globally.

The primary host plants for Unaspis species are citrus trees, including lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. While they prefer these hosts, high-density infestations can occasionally spread to other evergreen ornamentals. Their ability to remain hidden under a hard protective cover makes them persistent residents in any infested plantation if left unchecked.

The life cycle of the scale involves significant sexual dimorphism. Females remain sedentary under their protective, often brown or grayish covers, while males are small, winged, and actively seek out females for mating. Development consists of the egg stage, mobile crawler stage, and the sessile adult stage. Multiple generations occur annually depending on regional temperatures.

The damage caused by Unaspis is primarily due to the piercing-sucking feeding habits of the insects. By extracting sap from the bark and fruit, they cause chlorosis, localized dieback of twigs, and bark cracking. Severe infestations can lead to canopy thinning, reduced fruit quality, and, in extreme cases, the total death of the tree.

Effective management and control strategies for Unaspis include:

• Regular monitoring and pruning of heavily infested branches to reduce population density.
• Application of systemic insecticides that target crawlers during their most vulnerable stage.
• Use of horticultural oils to suffocate sedentary adult scales by covering their breathing pores.
• Implementing strict quarantine measures for incoming nursery stock to prevent spread.
• Utilizing biological control agents such as predatory beetles and parasitic wasps to suppress populations.
