Description

The Grape root borer (Vitacea polistiformis) is a serious pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. This moth is particularly destructive because its larvae feed on the roots and the crown of the vine, often remaining undetected until the vine begins to decline in vigor or suddenly dies.

The primary host for this pest is the grape vine. It affects various cultivars and species within the Vitis genus. Because the larvae remain subterranean or within the woody base of the plant for most of their life cycle, they avoid traditional foliar insecticide applications, making them a difficult challenge for vineyard managers.

The life cycle typically spans two years, although some individuals may complete it in one year. Adult moths emerge in mid-summer, resembling wasps in appearance and flight behavior. After mating, females deposit eggs on the soil surface or bark. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the roots to feed on the cambium and xylem layers.

The damage caused by the Grape root borer leads to severe vine stress. As larvae tunnel through the roots, they sever the vascular system, significantly reducing the vine's ability to transport water and nutrients. Infected vines typically show chlorosis, stunted shoot growth, and a marked reduction in yield before eventual collapse.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Cultivation practices such as mounding soil around the base of the vine can sometimes help prevent neonate larvae from accessing the roots. Monitoring the flight of adult moths using pheromone traps is the most reliable way to time any potential chemical interventions.
