Webbia pabo

Webbia pabo is a species of bark beetle belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae within the Curculionidae family. As an ambrosia beetle, its biological success depends on a symbiotic relationship with fungi. These beetles are classified within the order Coleoptera, and they are recognized for their specialized lifestyle of cultivating fungus inside the host tree's woody tissue.

This pest primarily affects woody plants, including various forest species and occasionally horticultural crops. Webbia pabo targets trees that are already compromised by environmental stress, such as drought, frost damage, or physical injury. Once a tree's defense mechanism is lowered, the beetles find it easier to penetrate the bark and establish their gallery systems.

The biology of Webbia pabo is characterized by internal development. Adult females bore tunnels into the wood and introduce symbiotic fungi, which serve as the primary food source for their larvae. The life cycle encompasses egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages, all occurring deep within the tree host. This hidden life style makes the species difficult to combat using surface-applied pesticides alone.

The damage caused by this insect involves both mechanical and physiological disruption. The tunnels sever the xylem, impeding the flow of water and nutrients throughout the tree. Visible symptoms include the presence of frass (wood dust) around entry holes and localized dieback of branches. Over time, heavy infestation leads to the decline and eventual mortality of the affected plant.
