Ambrosia beetle
Xyleborinus attenuatus
Description
Systematic position. Xyleborinus attenuatus is a species of beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. As a member of the ambrosia beetle group, it possesses a unique symbiotic relationship with fungi, which it cultivates within its galleries to serve as the primary food source for its larvae.
Host plants. This pest is a polyphagous insect that attacks a wide variety of deciduous tree species. Common hosts include oak, beech, elm, and alder, as well as various fruit trees in orchards. The beetle is particularly attracted to trees that are already stressed due to drought, physical injury, or root diseases, though it can also colonize apparently healthy trees.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females bore into the xylem, creating intricate gallery systems. They introduce symbiotic fungi into the wood, which develop on the gallery walls. Larvae feed on this fungal growth rather than the wood itself, and the entire brood develops safely within these protected tunnels.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. The physical damage caused by the drilling of tunnels disrupts the vascular system of the tree, impeding the flow of water and nutrients. Furthermore, the associated fungi cause staining and localized necrosis within the wood tissue. Severe infestations weaken the structural integrity of the tree, leading to decline, dieback, and significant loss of timber value.
Protection measures. Managing Xyleborinus attenuatus requires a proactive approach due to the beetle's protected life inside the wood:
- Implementation of strict forest hygiene, including the prompt removal and destruction of infested wood.
- Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to discourage beetle attacks.
- Applying residual insecticides to tree trunks during the swarming and emergence periods.
- Using pheromone-based monitoring traps to detect early outbreaks and time control measures effectively.
