It is a highly specialized wood-boring insect that is widely recognized for its symbiotic relationship with fungi, which serve as its primary food source during the larval stage.

Affected crops: This beetle primarily attacks broad-leaved trees. Its hosts include various species of oaks, beeches, maples, alders, and other forest trees. While it prefers weakened or recently felled timber, high population densities often lead to attacks on healthy trees, particularly in managed forests and nurseries.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Xyleborinus exiguus is unique because it relies on the cultivation of ambrosia fungi inside the galleries it bores into the wood. The female beetle excavates galleries and introduces fungal spores. The larvae then feed on the fungal mat growing on the tunnel walls, which provides essential nutrients for their rapid development.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The damage is caused by the boring of tunnels, which compromise the structural integrity of the wood and introduce pathogenic fungi that cause staining and decay. This significantly reduces the quality of timber and can lead to the physiological decline of the host tree, often resulting in crown dieback or mortality if the infestation is severe.
