Description
Xyleborinus gracilis is a species of ambrosia beetle belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae within the Curculionidae family. These tiny beetles are significant pests that colonize woody plants, creating a complex network of tunnels deep within the xylem to cultivate symbiotic fungi that serve as their primary food source.
This pest primarily affects a wide range of deciduous trees, including fruit orchards, ornamental trees, and forest timber. It is particularly attracted to trees that are already physiologically stressed due to drought, mechanical injury, or poor growing conditions, making them more susceptible to infestation.
The life cycle of the beetle is intricately tied to its symbiotic relationship with fungi. Adult beetles bore into the bark and sapwood, carrying fungal spores into the galleries. The larvae develop within these tunnels, grazing on the fungal mycelium lining the gallery walls. Depending on the climate, the species can undergo multiple generations annually.
Damage caused by Xyleborinus gracilis is identified by minute entry holes on the bark, often accompanied by fine frass (wood dust). As the infestation progresses, the tunnels disrupt the water and nutrient transport system of the host plant, often leading to canopy dieback, branch failure, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as maintaining tree vigor through irrigation and fertilization are critical for prevention.
