It is a wood-boring beetle, often categorized as an ambrosia beetle due to its obligate symbiotic relationship with specific fungi cultivated within the wood gallery system for nutrition.

Host plants and crops. This species primarily affects various deciduous trees, with a preference for stressed or weakened hosts. In agricultural settings, it can infest fruit trees, while in forestry, it targets sick or damaged timber, often taking advantage of environmental conditions like drought or poor plantation management.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle occurs entirely within the host plant's tissues. Adult females initiate gallery construction by boring into the sapwood, introducing fungal spores along the way. The larvae feed on the fungus growing on the gallery walls. This secluded lifestyle provides the brood with significant protection against predators and most contact-based environmental factors.

Damage patterns and pest significance. The damage is primarily caused by the tunneling activity of both adults and larvae, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients within the tree. This leads to reduced vigor, branch dieback, and, in severe cases, tree mortality. Furthermore, the associated fungi cause staining and structural decay of the wood, rendering it unsuitable for commercial use.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated approach focusing on prevention. Key strategies include:
