Systematic position: The fruit-tree pinhole borer (Xyleborinus saxesenii) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a well-known ambrosia beetle, meaning that it maintains a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, which it cultivates within its galleries to provide food for its larvae.
Host plants: This beetle is a polyphagous insect that attacks a wide variety of deciduous and coniferous trees. It is particularly problematic in fruit orchards, affecting apples, pears, cherries, and plums. It also colonizes broad-leaved forest trees such as oak, beech, and alder, especially when they are stressed or weakened by environmental factors.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles overwinter in galleries within the wood. In the spring, the females emerge to locate suitable host trees. They bore small entry holes and construct tunnels, where they introduce fungal spores. The larvae feed on the developing mycelium rather than the wood itself. Multiple generations can occur within a single season depending on climate conditions.
Damage and pest status: The primary damage is caused by the construction of elaborate tunnel systems, which interrupt water and nutrient transport within the tree. Infested trees may show signs of wilting, premature leaf drop, or sap exudation. In severe cases, the structural integrity of the wood is compromised, and the fungal infection spreads, leading to branch dieback or total tree mortality.
Protection measures: Management relies heavily on orchard hygiene. Removing and burning infested wood is critical to reducing the local population. Monitoring the flight period of adults using ethanol-baited traps helps in timing insecticide applications. Keeping trees healthy and minimizing environmental stress remains the most effective long-term preventative measure against these beetles.
