Description

Systematic position. The brown ambrosia beetle (Xyleborus aquilus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. As a member of the ambrosia beetle group, this species is characterized by its symbiotic relationship with fungi, which it introduces into the wood to serve as a food source for its developing larvae.

Host plants. This pest is a polyphagous insect that attacks various deciduous tree species. Fruit trees such as apples, pears, and cherries are frequently susceptible, especially if the trees are under physiological stress, have sustained pruning wounds, or have suffered from environmental damage. It typically seeks out weakened wood to establish its galleries.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Xyleborus aquilus is deeply integrated with the fungi it cultivates within the host tree. Females bore tunnels into the sapwood, creating chambers where they lay eggs. The larvae feed on the fungal "ambrosia" growing on the walls of these galleries. Depending on the climate, multiple generations can occur per season, enabling the population to spread rapidly if conditions are favorable.

Damage and economic impact. The beetle causes significant damage by disrupting the vascular system of the host tree, leading to branch dieback or total tree death in severe cases. Infestations are often signaled by the presence of fine wood dust (frass) pushed out of small, circular entry holes in the bark. Secondary infections from other pathogens may also enter the wood through these tunnels.

Chemical control is limited to precise applications during the adult flight stage, making early detection the most critical factor for successful orchard management.
