Hickory bark beetle

Systematic position. The Hickory bark beetle (Xyleborus celsus) is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. As a representative of the ambrosia beetles, it exhibits a unique biological strategy, relying heavily on symbiotic fungi for its nutritional requirements throughout its lifecycle.

Host plants. This species is primarily associated with trees in the genus Carya (hickory), though it also targets various species of Quercus (oak). It is particularly attracted to stressed, dying, or recently felled timber, where the moisture content of the wood is suitable for the cultivation of the fungi required by the beetle's larvae.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle involves the female beetle boring into the sapwood and heartwood to create galleries. Within these galleries, she introduces specific fungi that grow on the walls. The larvae feed on these fungal mats rather than directly on the wood tissue. Once the larvae mature, the new generation of adults emerges through small, circular exit holes in the bark.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by the construction of tunnels that penetrate deep into the timber. This activity leads to the degradation of wood quality, rendering the lumber unsuitable for fine woodworking. Furthermore, the tunneling process introduces pathogens that contribute to the rapid decline and eventual death of the affected tree.

Management strategies. Effective control requires a combination of silvicultural and preventive practices:

• Immediate removal and disposal of infested trees to eliminate breeding sites.
• Debarking logs quickly after harvest to disrupt the beetle's colonization process.
• Improving overall forest health through thinning to reduce tree stress.
• Utilizing pheromone traps for monitoring populations during the flight season.
• Restricting the movement of logs from infested areas to prevent the spread of the pest.
