Description

Systematic position. Xyleborus discolor belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized wood-boring beetle, often referred to as an ambrosia beetle due to its symbiotic relationship with fungi, which it cultivates inside the host tree to feed its offspring.

Host plants. This species is a polyphagous pest, capable of infesting a wide range of deciduous and tropical tree species. In agricultural settings, it frequently targets fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, and various stone fruits, especially those that are stressed by environmental factors like drought or physical injury.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is intricately tied to the fungi introduced into the tree by the female beetle. After entering the sapwood, the beetle excavates galleries where it deposits eggs. The larvae do not feed directly on the wood but consume the fungal mycelium growing on the walls of the galleries. This internal development makes the pest highly resistant to conventional external treatments.

Damage and pest significance. The damage is primarily caused by the tunneling activity of both adults and larvae, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients within the tree. Infested trees show symptoms such as wilting branches, crown dieback, and reduced vigor. Small entry holes on the bark, often accompanied by wood dust (frass), are the most distinct external signs of an infestation.

Management and control. Controlling Xyleborus discolor is challenging because the larvae are protected deep within the wood. Management relies heavily on sanitation: removing and destroying infested branches or entire trees is the most effective way to lower the population. Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization is crucial for increasing the tree's natural resistance to beetle attacks.
