Oak ambrosia beetle

The oak ambrosia beetle (lat. Xyleborus dryographus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). As a significant forest pest, it specializes in attacking deciduous trees, with a particular affinity for oak species in forest ecosystems and nurseries.

This pest primarily infests trees of the genus Quercus. While it thrives in weakened or decaying timber, high population densities often lead to attacks on healthy, vigorous trees. Beside oaks, it can occasionally be found on other hardwood species like beech and hornbeam, which broadens its ecological niche within mixed forest stands.

The biology of this species is characterized by a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi. Adult beetles bore deep galleries into the sapwood and heartwood of the tree, introducing fungal spores. The larvae do not consume the wood directly; instead, they graze on the fungal mycelium (ambrosia) that grows on the walls of the galleries. This dependency makes the species sensitive to the moisture content of the host tree.

The primary damage is caused by the intricate network of tunnels bored by the beetles. These galleries physically disrupt the tree's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients. Furthermore, the associated fungi can cause wood staining and lead to secondary infections, ultimately leading to crown dieback, reduced timber value, and tree mortality in severe infestations.

Managing the oak ambrosia beetle requires proactive forest management:

• Regular forest health inspections to identify infested trees.
• Immediate removal and disposal of infested logs to stop the spread.
• Application of chemical treatments on trunks during the peak flight season.
• Use of pheromone traps to monitor population levels and timing.
• Maintaining forest hygiene by clearing logging debris and residues promptly.
