Ambrosia beetle Xyleborus ebriosus

Xyleborus ebriosus

Description

Xyleborus ebriosus is a species of bark beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. As an ambrosia beetle, it does not feed directly on the wood tissue of its host, but rather farms symbiotic fungi within its galleries, which serve as the primary nutritional source for its developing larvae.

This pest colonizes various woody plant species, showing a preference for stressed or weakened trees. Its ability to infest a wide range of host plants makes it a potential threat in both forestry and commercial orchards, particularly when trees are compromised by drought, frost damage, or improper pruning practices.

The biology of this beetle is characterized by the female boring into the sapwood and heartwood to establish galleries. These galleries become infected with the ambrosia fungus, which the beetle actively introduces. The larvae thrive in these galleries, feeding on the fungal growth while the parent beetle continues to manage the tunnel system and provide care for the brood.

Infestation symptoms are often subtle at first. Key indicators include:

  • Tiny, round entry holes on the bark surface.
  • Presence of fine, sawdust-like frass (boring dust) at the base of the tree or in bark crevices.
  • Staining of the wood tissue surrounding the galleries due to fungal activity.
  • Dieback of individual branches or structural weakening of the main trunk.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is paramount: all infested wood must be identified, removed, and destroyed by burning or chipping to prevent the emergence of a new generation. Monitoring with pheromone traps is essential to time insecticide applications during peak flight periods. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization remains the most effective defense against beetle colonization.
