Red twig borer

Xyleborus ferrugineus

Description

The Red twig borer (Xyleborus ferrugineus) is a member of the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized globally as a significant wood-boring pest that poses a serious threat to a wide range of woody hosts in tropical and subtropical regions.

This beetle species attacks numerous plant varieties, including coffee, cacao, citrus, and various timber trees. It shows a preference for trees that are already weakened by environmental stresses, such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or prior damage from diseases, making them highly susceptible to invasion.

Its biological cycle is intricately linked with symbiotic fungi, often referred to as ambrosia fungi. Adult females bore into the sapwood to construct galleries where they introduce the fungi. The larvae and adults feed exclusively on these fungal gardens cultivated inside the wood, which distinguishes them from typical bark beetles.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by pinhole-sized entry points on the bark. As the galleries penetrate the xylem and phloem, they disrupt the transport of water and nutrients. This structural damage frequently leads to branch dieback, crown wilting, and in severe infestations, the death of the entire tree.

  • Implementing strict orchard sanitation to remove infested wood.
  • Monitoring pest populations using alcohol-baited traps.
  • Maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation.
  • Applying preventive insecticide sprays during peak flight periods.
  • Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids in the ecosystem.

Management of the red twig borer is challenging due to its concealed nature. Because the beetles spend most of their life cycle inside the wood, chemical contact sprays are only effective during the short periods when adults emerge to colonize new host trees. Therefore, prevention remains the most effective strategy.
