Description
The Redbay ambrosia beetle (Xyleborus glabratus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Curculionidae and subfamily Scolytinae. Originally native to parts of Asia, it has become a major invasive pest in North America, posing a significant risk to native forest species and horticultural crops.
The beetle primarily attacks trees within the Lauraceae family. Key hosts include the redbay (Persea borbonia) and the commercially valuable avocado (Persea americana). Adult females are attracted to the volatile chemicals emitted by these trees, making them highly susceptible to infestation.
The biology of Xyleborus glabratus is complex due to its symbiotic relationship with the fungus Raffaelea lauricola. Upon entering the tree, the beetle inoculates the wood with the fungus, which serves as the exclusive food source for its larvae. The beetle completes its life cycle entirely within the wood galleries.
The beetle's damage is devastating because it introduces the fungal pathogen into the host tree, causing a condition known as "laurel wilt." This disease clogs the tree's xylem vessels, preventing water transport. The rapid decline and death of the host tree typically occur within a few weeks or months after the initial attack.
Managing the Redbay ambrosia beetle is challenging because the insects spend most of their life cycle protected inside the tree. Current control strategies include:
- Implementing strict phytosanitary regulations to prevent movement of infested wood.
- Monitoring populations using specialized pheromone-baited traps.
- Sanitizing infested areas through the removal and destruction of dead or symptomatic trees.
