Hairy ambrosia beetle

The hairy ambrosia beetle (Latin: Xyleborus hirsutus) belongs to the Curculionidae family, specifically the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a highly specialized wood-boring insect that spends the majority of its life cycle hidden within the xylem tissues of host trees, making it a persistent and difficult pest to eradicate.

This beetle species targets a variety of woody plants, particularly focusing on fruit trees and hardwood species. While they frequently infest stressed or dying trees, they are capable of attacking healthy trees in high-pressure environments, often attracted by volatile chemical signals emitted by the stressed wood.

The biology of Xyleborus hirsutus is characterized by a unique obligate relationship with ambrosia fungi. Adult females bore into the sapwood to create gallery systems and introduce fungal spores. These fungi serve as the primary nutritional source for the larvae. The developmental cycle includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, all occurring within the galleries.

Damage caused by this beetle is primarily mechanical and physiological. The tunneling activities disrupt the vascular tissue (xylem), significantly impeding water and nutrient transport throughout the tree. Signs of infestation include frass (wood dust) around entrance holes, crown dieback, and in severe cases, the sudden death of branches or the entire tree.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Critical steps include:

• Regular sanitation: prompt removal and destruction of infested wood to reduce population density.
• Monitoring: the use of ethanol-baited traps to track flight activity.
• Cultural practices: promoting tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
• Chemical control: applying registered insecticides during the flight period to prevent colonization.
