As an ambrosia beetle, it has a specialized symbiotic relationship with fungi, which it introduces into trees to use as a food source for its developing offspring within the wood tunnels.
This pest affects a variety of broad-leaved tree species. Common hosts include species of oak, beech, and chestnut, as well as several fruit-bearing trees such as apple and plum trees. It primarily targets stressed or declining trees, making them particularly vulnerable during drought periods or after severe frost events.
The biology of Xyleborus lewisi revolves around the creation of intricate gallery systems in the xylem of the host tree. After mating, the female bores into the wood, inoculating the walls with fungal spores.
