Description
The Oak shothole borer (Xyleborus monographus) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This insect is known as an ambrosia beetle, meaning it maintains a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, which it introduces into the wood to provide food for its larvae.
This pest primarily infests various oak species, although it can also be found on chestnut, beech, and hornbeam. It generally targets stressed or weakened trees. In many regions, the beetle has become a serious concern due to the increasing frequency of droughts, which make forest stands more susceptible to infestation.
The biology of the beetle involves the female excavating tunnels deep into the wood. Unlike many other bark beetles, Xyleborus monographus does not feed directly on wood fibers. Instead, it cultivates fungal gardens on the tunnel walls. The larvae consume this fungal growth, which facilitates their development even within the hard heartwood of the tree.
The damage caused is twofold. First, the gallery systems create numerous pinholes throughout the timber, significantly reducing its commercial value and structural integrity. Second, the introduced fungi can cause discoloration and accelerate the wood's decay, which weakens the tree's physiological status and makes it prone to secondary pathogens.
Control measures are primarily preventive and silvicultural. The most effective approach is the rapid removal and disposal of infested trees to eliminate breeding sites before the new generation of adults emerges. Foresters also utilize pheromone-baited traps to monitor adult populations and determine the optimal timing for sanitary interventions.
