Xyleborus perforans is a significant wood-boring beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. Known as an ambrosia beetle, this species has a global distribution and is recognized for its ability to damage a wide variety of hardwood tree species, often resulting in significant timber loss.

This pest attacks a broad range of hosts, including tea plants, rubber trees, and various tropical hardwood species. It is particularly attracted to stressed, dying, or freshly cut trees, but under specific environmental conditions, high-density populations can transition to attacking relatively healthy trees, causing physiological decline.

The biology of Xyleborus perforans is characterized by an obligatory symbiotic relationship with ambrosia fungi. Adult females bore galleries into the sapwood and heartwood of trees, where they introduce the fungi. The larvae and adults do not consume the wood fibers directly but instead graze on the fungal mycelium that grows on the gallery walls, which is essential for their development.

Damage caused by this beetle is evidenced by small, circular entry holes on the bark, accompanied by fine, powdery frass. The internal galleries are often stained black or dark brown due to the associated fungi. This damage disrupts the transport of water and nutrients within the tree, often leading to crown dieback, structural weakness, and secondary infections by other pathogens.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices:

• conducting regular sanitary surveys to identify and remove infested trees immediately;
• utilizing trap logs or pheromone-baited traps to monitor adult flight periods;
• applying preventative insecticide treatments to vulnerable or high-value timber;
• implementing proper plantation hygiene and reducing environmental stressors to improve tree vitality.
